Gestalt Therapy is a humanistic, existential approach to counselling with a creative twist. With the goal being to establish a healthy uninterrupted flow of experience, a key principle of Gestalt therapy relies upon the understanding of the cycle of awareness. The cycle of awareness follows the process which takes place when a need arises, and then, ideally, flows across seven inter-relating processes to achieve complete satisfaction. Cycles do not necessarily originate from the same point, however the Gestalt idea of what is likely to support healthy living requires a person to be able to move through their cycle with fluidity.
When a person makes the conscious decision to begin counselling, it is possible that they have been experiencing interruptions within their cycle. As a gestalt therapist, I aim to recognise where the interrupts are by identifying coping mechanisms in which my clients have come to rely upon, indicating difficulties addressing each essential step, resulting in emotional dissatisfaction.
